Common G Tech Problems
Overheating can be common in G-Tech products. Aside from the drive remaining silent when powering up, you can occasionally smell the burning from the PCB (Printed Circuit Board). It is increasingly common that G-Technology drives will not mount or show on the disk utility, which could show electrical damage. Problems with the PCB can prevent the hard drive from being recognized by the computer. G-SPEEDs also have a Temperature Warning light that will stay solid red if there is a hard disk drive failure. A blinking red light should be normal during power-up, or during formatting. Clicking noises have also been described, which would indicate a physical problem with the hard drive. Immediately turn off the drive and contact us. Do not power up the device. These noises indicate internal damage to the drive and running them can cause further damage to the platters, where the data is stored.
About G-Technology
In 2004, Medea Corporation (founded in the late 1980s) was sold to Avid Technology. The co-founder of Medea purchased the rights to one of their products from Avid (a two-drive RAID storage system) and opened up a business in Santa Monica. The company sold products to a local community of creative professionals. In 2006, they signed an agreement with Apple that increased its product placement in U.S. Apple stores. Their revenue skyrocketed.
In 2008, after being acquired by Fabrik Inc, G-Technology introduced the world’s first 500GB portable storage at Macworld Expo, as well as the industry’s first 1TB portable external storage drive. In the 2009 Macworld Expo, G-Technology announced the first family of external Solid-State Drives. G-Technology is currently owned by Western Digital.
